Free knowledge!

I've registered in two some online courses offered for free with lecturers form different universities (Stanford, Michigan, and Berkeley).Two of the courses are Game Theory and Model Thinking. The lecturers are Matthew Jackson and Yoav Shoham for the former and Scott E Page for the latter. I'm simply mad about learning and free knowledge sharing. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the subjects in themselves, but also about on line knowledge sharing.

The main site seems to be called Cursera, and a statement says:
"We are committed to making the best education in the world freely available to any person who seeks it. We envision people throughout the world, in both developed and developing countries, using our platform to get access to world-leading education that has so far been available only to a tiny few. We see them using this education to improve their lives, the lives of their families, and the communities they live in"

Even if they are offering the courses for free as a trial and for learning by doing,to detect errors and for improvement of the service before they start selling diplomas (so we are going to be their guinea pigs) and I'm perfectly good with that.

They are offering the following online courses: Lean Launch pad, Technology Entrepreneurship, Anatomy, Making Green Buildings, Information Theory, Model Thinking, CS 101, Machine Learning, Software as a Service, Human-Computer Interaction, Natural Language Processing, Game Theory, Probabilistic Graphical Models, Cryptography, Design and Analysis of Algorithms I, and Computer Security.

Antimatter trapped at CERN

Antimatter trapped at CERN. here is the press release and a summary form the source:

"The ALPHA experiment at CERN has taken an important step forward in developing techniques to understand one of the Universe’s open questions: is there a difference between matter and antimatter? In a paper published in Nature today, the collaboration shows that it has successfully produced and trapped atoms of antihydrogen. This development opens the path to new ways of making detailed measurements of antihydrogen, which will in turn allow scientists to compare matter and antimatter.

Antimatter – or the lack of it – remains one of the biggest mysteries of science. Matter and its counterpart are identical except for opposite charge, and they annihilate when they meet. At the Big Bang, matter and antimatter should have been produced in equal amounts. However, we know that our world is made up of matter: antimatter seems to have disappeared. To find out what has happened to it, scientists employ a range of methods to investigate whether a tiny difference in the properties of matter and antimatter could point towards an explanation."
