The Scientist: Elsevier Abandons Anti-Open Access Bill

Recently some academics from the mathematical community started a ban on Elsevier. This was spurred by the editorial company's support of the RWA and by, what seems to be, a greedy commercial policy. Now Elsevier is giving it a thought and changing some of its policies, is it? If that is the case, then academic rebellion, coordination, and self-empowerment among other things is proving to be a strong force, what can we expect to come in the near future?

Free knowledge!

I've registered in two some online courses offered for free with lecturers form different universities (Stanford, Michigan, and Berkeley).Two of the courses are Game Theory and Model Thinking. The lecturers are Matthew Jackson and Yoav Shoham for the former and Scott E Page for the latter. I'm simply mad about learning and free knowledge sharing. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the subjects in themselves, but also about on line knowledge sharing.

The main site seems to be called Cursera, and a statement says:

"We are committed to making the best education in the world freely available to any person who seeks it. We envision people throughout the world, in both developed and developing countries, using our platform to get access to world-leading education that has so far been available only to a tiny few. We see them using this education to improve their lives, the lives of their families, and the communities they live in"

Even if they are offering the courses for free as a trial and for learning by doing,to detect errors and for improvement of the service before they start selling diplomas (so we are going to be their guinea pigs) and I'm perfectly good with that.

They are offering the following online courses: Lean Launch pad, Technology Entrepreneurship, Anatomy, Making Green Buildings, Information Theory, Model Thinking, CS 101, Machine Learning, Software as a Service, Human-Computer Interaction, Natural Language Processing, Game Theory, Probabilistic Graphical Models, Cryptography, Design and Analysis of Algorithms I, and Computer Security.

Christopher Hitchens (1949-2011). Adiós y gracias.

A Christopher Hitchens un adiós y un gracias. The Guardian: "For most of his career, Christopher Hitchens, who has died of oesophageal cancer aged 62, was the left's biggest journalistic star, writing and broadcasting with wit, style and originality in a period when such qualities were in short supply among those of similar political persuasion. Nobody else spoke with such confidence and passion for what Americans called "liberalism" and Hitchens (regarding "liberal" as too "evasive") called "socialism"."

Remembrance Day, por los mexicanos caídos

Hoy es "Remembrance Day" en Inglaterra, se recuerda a los caídos en la guerra ¿cuál guerra? La primera guerra mundial, pero no importa cuál guerra, todas las guerras son estúpidas e innecesarias, tal vez porque los seres humanos somos consistentemente estúpidos en muchos sentidos, ojalá no sea el caso que lleguemos a ser innecesarios. La guerra contra el narcotráfico en México es una guerra estúpida e innecesaria en el sentido de que jamas debimos permitir que nuestra estupidez nos hiciera llegar a esté punto. No repitamos los mismos errores, tampoco dejemos que otros los repitan. Hoy participo del "Remembrance Day" recordando a todos los mexicanos que han muerto en la estúpida ola de violencia que aqueja a mi querido país, en especial a todos aquellos que han muerto siendo inocentes. Lorenzo Meyer sobre Don Miguel Ángel Granados Chapa

En su columna de hoy en el periódico El Norte, Lorenzo Meyer escribe sobre Don Miguel Ángel. Vale mucho la pena leerlo, nos da cuenta del tipo de hombre que México necesita, un tipo de mexicano que rara vez se ha visto y que debería fomentarse en el seno de todas las instituciones, empezando por la familia. Un extracto:

Justamente en la entrega de la Belisario Domínguez en octubre de 2008, Granados Chapa usó la tribuna del Senado para hacer este diagnóstico: "El poder del dinero y el poder criminal de las armas sustraen ya ahora con marcas crecientes de la vida en común al imperio de la ley y la capacidad rectora del Estado. El ímpetu feroz de la delincuencia organizada parece no reconocer límites, los rompe todos... Los poderes fácticos, los que gobiernan sin haber sido elegidos, los que buscan y obtienen ganancia de negocios que atentan contra el interés general gobiernan en mayor medida que los gobiernos; la lucha de unos y otros poderes ilegítimos contra la sociedad, su éxito en el propósito de dominarla es favorecida por una situación económica, material cada vez más adversa, menos propiciatoria que la prosperidad y la expansión de la potencialidad humana". El resultado de este conjunto de males ha producido en México "enfermedades del espíritu colectivo" que de no sanarse nos llevarán a la desgracia.

Son cosas que sabemos, pero que olvidamos atrás en la memoria, muy escondido. Don Miguel Ángel nos hacía traerlo y entrar en conciencia.

Después de 34 años de "Plaza Pública" al parecer ahora si se nos va de los medios. Finaliza Don Miguel Ángel Granados Chapa su última columna con las siguientes palabras:"Esta es la última vez en que nos encontramos. Con esa convicción digo adiós." Mi admiración y respeto al señor. Gracias Don Miguel Ángel por todo lo que nos ha dado a los mexicanos y a México.

Prestigio relativo

Creo que con esto de los neutrinos más veloces que la luz, la ciencia económica recupero prestigio relativo respecto de las "ciencias duras".

Roland Fryer: 2011 MacArthur Fellow

Roland Fryer es uno de los ganadores de la MacArthur Fellowship este año. Parte importante de su trabajo versa sobre las disparidades existentes entre razas y el fenómeno de desigualdad en los Estados Unidos. También sobre los efectos de la educación en la desigualdad, así como la eficiencia de distintos incentivos en el desempeño escolar. También se le reconoce por ser buen economista teórico y empírico, algo que no se ve mucho en economía y en otras áreas del conocimiento.
